Background
The Avenue Hospital is a specialist medical facility in inner-city Melbourne, renowned for orthopaedic and sports injury care. As part of an ongoing upgrade, three of the hospital’s eleven operating theatres were being refurbished.
Operating within a live healthcare setting required meticulous planning to avoid disruption to patient care and uphold the stringent hygiene standards. Protecta worked with Erilyan to deliver tailored protection solutions that supported the hospital’s operations throughout construction.
Challenge
Working within an active hospital environment, the project demanded solutions that ensured minimal disruption, upheld Infection Prevention Control protocols, and allowed safe access for patients, staff and visitors.
Four primary protection zones were identified:
1. Work Zone Separation:
A temporary barrier was required to contain dust and noise while being cleanable to maintain compliance with hospital hygiene protocols.
2. Walkway Protection:
The shared walkway (consisting of hard flooring and carpet) from the hospital entrance to the work zone needed a non-slip, durable floor protection solution, capable of withstanding frequent foot traffic, heavy equipment movement and regular cleaning with a floor scrubber.
3. Protect Finished Flooring:
The goods lift used for transporting materials needed interior wall protection to prevent damage during frequent use.
Solution
FastWall was selected to form a floor to ceiling temporary barrier between the active hospital and the refurbishment zone. Its tongue-and-groove panels allowed for quick after-hours installation and removal, while the easy to clean PVC surface supported routine cleaning to hospital standards.
Protecta Board XTRA 3mm was installed along high-traffic walkways to provide robust, non-slip protection over hard flooring. The smooth finish facilitated regular machine scrubbing without compromising durability.
To address the challenge of protecting carpeted sections, Carpet Film was applied underneath the Protecta Board XTRA boards. This provided a secure layer so the boards could be held in place with tape while preventing adhesive contact with carpet fibres.
In the goods lift, Protecta Board XTRA 5mm was applied to the interior walls to absorb impact from materials in transit, preserving the condition of the lift throughout the project.
Final Result
Across the six-month project, Protecta’s solutions effectively safeguarded the hospital’s flooring, access walkways, and lift interiors, supporting uninterrupted operations while upholding strict Infection Prevention Control standards.
FastWall proved especially valuable for its speed of installation and clean finish, enabling after-hours deployment without delaying the construction schedule. The overall solution contributed to a safe, clean, and professional environment in one of Melbourne’s leading healthcare facilities.
